Before  Milton Hershey came around, what we know as Hershey, PA today, was Derry Township. This is where Milton Hershey was born. He knew that here, there were many farms and hard workers. It was then then that he decided he would move his small business of carmel selling, to the mass production of chocolate in his very own chocolate factory. Milton Hershey sold his small carmel business for one million dollars in 1900 to build the factory. He bought 1200 acres to construct his new model town on.

Starting A Town

Once Milton Hershey decided his factory location, he wanted a pleasant home and business for his workers. He began transforming Derry Township into the town Hershey, PA. He used the enourmous funds and salary of his company to build  churches, community centers, pools, parks, recreation buildings, a trolley system, department store, convention hall, amusement park, and many schools. He felt that if his workers were happy and satisfied, they would be more productive and pleasant. The Hershey Company, owned by Milton Hershey, gave $60,000,000 trust, for an orphanage.
